GCTU MOURNS DEATH OF ARAFAT

On the 11th of November 2004, in connection with the death of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat,
the General Secretary of the GCTU Vladimir Scherbakov sent his counterpart in the
International Confederation of Arab Trade Unions (ICATU), Hacene Djemam,
a message that says:
“On behalf of the General Confederation of Trade Unions we offer our sincere condolences to the workers
and trade unions of Palestine and of the whole Arab region in connection with the demise of the outstanding
public and political figure, Head of the Palestinian National Autonomy Yasser Arafat.
“The entire life of Yasser Arafat, a distinguished son of the Palestinian people, has been devoted
to the noble struggle for the independence of his Motherland, the happiness and well-being of Palestinian
workers. His tireless activity aimed at achieving peace and security in the region has won him high esteem
and deep respect throughout the world and in the international trade union movement. His achievements
in the struggle for the rights and interests of his people were marked by the Nobel Prize for Peace and the
highest awards of many foreign states.
“The image of Yasser Arafat, an eminent son of the Palestinian people, will always remain in the
memory of workers in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). Please convey our most sincere
condolences to all the leaders of the Palestinian trade unions and the Arab trade union movement.
“We are convinced that the struggle for Palestine’s full independence initiated under the leadership of
Yasser Arafat will be successfully and worthily carried on by his successors in the name
of peace and social progress in the Near East and throughout the world”.
